What is Astigmatism ?

Astigmatism is a type of refractive error. Astigmatism occurs when the cornea or lens is curved more steeply in one direction than in another. You have corneal astigmatism if your cornea has mismatched curves. You have lenticular astigmatism if your lens has mismatched curves.

2.What is the main cause of astigmatism?

It’s not known what causes astigmatism, but genetics is a big factor. It’s often present at birth, but it may develop later in life. It may also occur as a result of an injury to the eye or after eye surgery. Astigmatism often occurs with nearsightedness or farsightedness.

3. What astigmatism looks like?

Blurred vision is the most common astigmatism symptom. It also makes it hard to see details on objects, like the words printed on a menu in front of you, or letters on a road sign in the distance. Other astigmatism symptoms include: Seeing a glare or halos around lights.

4. How does astigmatism affect your life?

Blurry or distorted vision – One of the top symptoms of astigmatism is vision that is blurry or distorted. Objects may appear stretched, parts of an image may appear to jump out at you, or you might experience double vision.

5. Can astigmatism harm eyes?

Children may not realize they have blurry vision and are unlikely to complain about blurred or distorted vision. But without treatment, astigmatism can: impact a child’s performance in school and sports. lead to amblyopia (lazy eye) and vision loss.

6. What worsens astigmatism?

A few factors can cause your astigmatism to worsen, including your age, eye injuries, and keratoconus. While most people are diagnosed as children, you may notice your sight worsening as an adult too.

7. Can screen time cause astigmatism?

While it is not recommended to watch any size of a screen for long periods of time without eye rest, this particular activity won’t affect astigmatism as such.

8. How is astigmatism diagnosed?

An eye care specialist will diagnose astigmatism with an eye exam. Your eye care specialist might use few tests to diagnose astigmatism, including:Visual acuity, Refraction  and Keratometry.

9. How Is Astigmatism Corrected?

  • Eyeglasses or contact lenses. They work by refocusing light on the retina in the back of your eye so that you can see more clearly.
  • Refractive surgery. With LASIK and other procedures, a laser reshapes the cornea to adjust how light travels through it.
